Hiring a writer isn’t free. The tools the writer need to write isn’t free. Editing isn’t free. Paper isn’t free. Hiring a printing service isn’t free. There are a lot of costs that add up in producing a single page of a magazine. But even so, there are dozens of free magazines around. What is a free magazine, and why do they do it?

A free magazine is simply that – it’s free. But it isn’t as simple as it seems. The magazine itself might be free, but only because there are other ways for the magazine to gain a profit. “There’s no such thing as a free lunch”.

Trade magazines are popular because they provide business listings, trade listings, etc. People are always on the lookout for trade magazines. So these publications make money by featuring advertisements. It’s a lucrative business these days, and allows for people to avail free magazines.

Another method is for the publication to partner with another product as a means of free promotion. For example, a free copy of a video gaming magazine for every two boxes of cereal you purchase. Tactics like these benefit both the manufacturer of the product and the publication.

There is no such thing as a free lunch, but there is such a thing as a free magazine, after all.
